What is the difference between a report and an essay?
A report uses numbered sections, presents findings before discussion, ends with actionable recommendations and is written for a decision maker. An essay is continuous prose developing an argument for an academic reader. Submitting an essay with headings added is the most common structural error and loses marks under the format criterion.
What should an executive summary contain?
The findings and the recommendation, written so a reader could act without reading further. It is not an introduction previewing scope. Write it last, once you know what the report concluded, which is why it is the section that most often loses marks.
How detailed should recommendations be?
Each needs an action, an owner named as a role rather than "management", a timeline and a resource requirement. Adding a success measure strengthens it further, because feasibility is an explicit criterion on most rubrics and an uncosted recommendation cannot be assessed for it.
