Working With a Client Organization
The relationship is the part coursework did not prepare you for:
- Get the brief in writing. Clients describe symptoms; your job is to define the problem, then confirm it.
- Agree data access early. Promised data that never arrives is the most common capstone failure.
- Confirm confidentiality. Many clients require an NDA, which affects what can appear in a document your faculty reads.
- Set check-in dates. Sponsors get busy; scheduled contact protects you.
The Reflection Nobody Prepares
Faculty are assessing professional self-awareness: what you would do differently, where your assumptions were wrong, what the experience revealed about consulting. Generic reflection scores poorly. Specific reflection — "I framed the problem as a marketing issue for three weeks before interviews showed it was an operations bottleneck" — scores well.
Keep a short weekly log from the start. Writing the reflection from memory in the final week is why it underperforms.
