A UK Masters merit is 60-69 and a distinction is 70 or above, but the difference is not quantity of work. Merit-level writing describes what the literature says and applies frameworks correctly; distinction-level writing evaluates the literature, argues a position and defends it against alternatives.
The Classification Bands
- Distinction — 70%+. Critical, original synthesis; independent judgement; the argument holds under challenge.
- Merit — 60-69%. Strong analysis, sound structure, correct application, some critical engagement.
- Pass — 50-59%. Descriptive but accurate; limited critique; the question is addressed.
- Fail — below 50%. Unsupported assertion, misunderstanding, or the question not addressed.
Most institutions require a weighted average at the band plus a dissertation at or near it for the overall award. Check your programme regulations: some require the dissertation itself to reach 70 for a distinction regardless of the average.
What "Critical" Actually Means
The most common feedback on merit-level work is "more critical analysis needed", and the most common student response is to add more sources. That is the wrong move — it usually produces a longer literature review with the same problem.
Critical means taking a position on the material. Four moves that produce it:
- Compare rather than list. Not "Porter argues X. Barney argues Y." Instead: "Porter locates advantage in industry position while Barney locates it in the firm's resources; the difference matters here because the case firm's advantage survived a structural shift in its industry, which Porter's model struggles to explain."
- Judge the evidence. A 2003 study of 40 US manufacturers is not equivalent to a 2023 study of 4,000 firms across twelve countries. Say so, and say what follows.
- Name the limits of your framework. Distinction-level work says what the tool cannot see: "PESTLE identifies factors but does not weight them, so it cannot tell us which of these threats is material."
- Answer the strongest objection. State the best counter-argument and address it. Ignoring it does not make it invisible to your examiner.
The single most reliable upgrade: after each major section, add two or three sentences beginning "This matters because…" or "The limitation of this is…". That is the move markers are looking for when they write "descriptive".
Where Marks Are Actually Lost
- Not answering the question asked. "Critically evaluate" is not "describe". "To what extent" requires a position with a degree attached.
- A literature review that is a catalogue. Organise by theme and debate, not by author.
- Recommendations with no implementation. "The firm should diversify" is not a recommendation; who does what, by when, at what cost is.
- Referencing errors. Rarely more than a few marks directly, but they shape the marker's impression of the rest.
- Ignoring the word count. Being 20% under signals under-engagement more clearly than anything you wrote.
Read the Rubric as Instructions
UK rubrics list criteria with weightings — typically critical analysis, use of literature, structure, application and presentation. Those weightings tell you where marks are. If critical analysis is 40% and presentation is 10%, an extra hour on the argument is worth four times an hour on formatting.
Before submitting, put your draft beside the rubric and mark it yourself against each criterion. The gaps you find are the ones your examiner will find.
The Dissertation Is Different
Distinction-level dissertations are usually distinguished by methodology and by honesty about limitations, not by results. A well-justified method with a clear-eyed account of what it cannot show outscores an ambitious design executed loosely. Examiners are assessing whether you can do research, not whether the findings were impressive.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage is a distinction in a UK Masters?
Seventy per cent or above, with merit at 60 to 69 and pass at 50 to 59. Most programmes require a weighted average at the band and a dissertation at or near it; some require the dissertation itself to reach 70 for a distinction regardless of the average, so check your programme regulations.
What does "more critical analysis" mean in feedback?
It means take a position on the material rather than reporting it. Compare theories and say which explains your case better, judge the quality and currency of the evidence, name what your framework cannot see, and answer the strongest objection to your argument. Adding more sources without doing those things does not address the feedback.
Is a merit a good result for a UK Masters?
Yes. A merit is a strong postgraduate result and is accepted for most professional roles and many doctoral applications. Distinction is typically expected only for competitive funded PhD places and a small number of employers.
How is the final Masters classification calculated?
Usually a credit-weighted average across taught modules and the dissertation, with the dissertation carrying the largest single weighting — commonly a third of the total. Some institutions apply borderline rules that promote you if you are within one or two marks of a band and the dissertation sits in the higher band.
