A UK Masters dissertation is usually 12,000 to 20,000 words across five chapters, with the literature review and findings carrying roughly a quarter each. The methodology chapter is where UK examiners look hardest, because it shows whether you can design research rather than only report it.
The Standard Five-Chapter Split
Most UK business, management and social science programmes expect this shape. Percentages assume 15,000 words.
- Introduction — 10% (1,500 words). Context, problem, aim, objectives, research questions, structure.
- Literature review — 27% (4,000 words). Themes and debates, not a catalogue of authors.
- Methodology — 20% (3,000 words). Philosophy, design, sampling, instruments, analysis, ethics, limitations.
- Findings and discussion — 30% (4,500 words). Results, then what they mean against the literature.
- Conclusion — 13% (2,000 words). Answers to each objective, contribution, limitations, recommendations.
Check your handbook: some UK programmes separate findings from discussion into two chapters, and a few require a reflective appendix.
What counts toward the limit: UK institutions differ on whether the reference list, tables and appendices are included. Getting this wrong by 2,000 words is a penalty that costs more than any single weak section. Confirm it in writing before you plan.
Where UK Examiners Look Hardest
The methodology chapter. It is the section most often rewritten after a supervisor's feedback and the one that separates a merit from a distinction, because it demonstrates research capability rather than reading capability.
A strong UK methodology chapter states a philosophical position (positivist, interpretivist, pragmatist) and justifies it against the research question, rather than describing all three and picking one at the end.
The Literature Review That Earns Marks
Organise by theme or by debate. A review structured author by author — "Smith found… Jones argued…" — produces description automatically, because the structure leaves nowhere to adjudicate.
End each theme with the sentence that does the work: "What remains unresolved is whether this holds in smaller firms." Your research question then answers it, and the gap is established rather than asserted.
Findings and Discussion
Findings report; discussion interprets. Keep them distinguishable even in a combined chapter. The most common UK examiner comment here is that results were presented without being connected back to the literature reviewed in Chapter 2 — which makes Chapter 2 decorative.
A Realistic UK Timeline
For a September start with a September submission:
- Months 1-2: proposal, supervisor allocation, refine the question
- Month 3: ethics application — allow four to six weeks, and nothing can be collected until approval
- Months 4-5: literature review drafted
- Months 6-7: data collection and analysis
- Months 8-9: findings, discussion, conclusion, then a full editing pass
Build in two weeks of slack. Supervisors take time to return drafts, and August supervision is thin because of annual leave.
The Errors That Cost Most
- Objectives the conclusion never answers. Number them in Chapter 1 and answer them by number in Chapter 5.
- A methodology that describes textbook options instead of justifying your choices.
- Limitations treated as an apology. UK examiners reward a clear-eyed account of what your design cannot show.
- An abstract written last, in a hurry. It is the first thing read and often shapes the marker's expectation.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a UK Masters dissertation?
Most UK Masters dissertations are 12,000 to 20,000 words, with 15,000 the most common requirement in business and social sciences. Check whether your institution counts the reference list, tables and appendices toward the limit, because practice differs and the penalty for exceeding it can be significant.
How many chapters should a UK dissertation have?
Five is standard: introduction, literature review, methodology, findings and discussion, and conclusion. Some UK programmes split findings and discussion into separate chapters, and a few require an additional reflective section, so your programme handbook is the authority.
Which dissertation chapter carries the most marks?
The methodology chapter is usually where UK examiners distinguish a merit from a distinction, because it demonstrates whether you can design research rather than only report it. The literature review carries the most words, but the methodology carries the judgement.
When should I apply for ethics approval?
By around month three of a twelve-month programme. UK ethics review commonly takes four to six weeks, and you cannot collect any data until approval is granted, so a late application compresses your data collection rather than your writing.
