Canadian Graduate Thesis: Structure and Defence

Canadian Graduate Thesis: Structure and Defence

A Canadian masters thesis is approved by a supervisory committee rather than a single supervisor, and concludes with an oral defence before that committee plus an external examiner. The most common outcome is acceptance with minor revisions, and outright failure at defence is rare because supervisors do not schedule one prematurely.

The Committee Structure

Canadian graduate programs assign a supervisory committee, typically your supervisor plus two members, with an additional external or arm's-length examiner at defence. The committee approves the proposal, reads drafts and must agree the thesis is defensible.

This differs from systems where one supervisor decides. Practically, it means managing multiple readers who may disagree — and your supervisor arbitrates when they do. Take conflicting feedback to your supervisor rather than trying to satisfy everyone.

Meet the whole committee early. Students who only engage their supervisor until the final draft frequently receive substantial revision requests from committee members seeing the work fresh. An annual or semi-annual committee meeting is standard and worth using.

Structure

The traditional five-chapter monograph remains standard in Canadian social sciences, business and education:

  • Introduction — problem, purpose, research questions, significance
  • Literature review — organised thematically, ending at the gap
  • Methodology — design, participants, instruments, procedures, analysis, REB approval
  • Results — findings without interpretation
  • Discussion and conclusion — interpretation, limitations, implications, further research

Many Canadian science and health programs instead permit a manuscript-based or "sandwich" thesis: two or three publishable papers framed by an introduction and a synthesis chapter. Confirm which format your program allows before writing, because the structures are not interchangeable.

REB Approval Is a Hard Gate

No data collection may begin before Research Ethics Board approval under TCPS 2, and the CORE tutorial certificate is normally required with the application. Review runs two to eight weeks. Build it into your timeline as a blocking dependency, not a formality.

The Oral Defence

A typical Canadian masters defence runs 90 minutes to two hours:

  1. Presentation — usually 15 to 20 minutes covering problem, method, findings and contribution
  2. Questioning — external examiner first, then committee members, often two rounds
  3. Deliberation — you leave the room
  4. Outcome — accepted, accepted with minor revisions, major revisions, or referred

Minor revisions is the most common result. Outright failure is rare, because supervisors do not schedule a defence for work that is not ready.

Preparing for Questions

Committees ask a predictable set:

  • Why this question, and why does it matter?
  • Why this method rather than the obvious alternative?
  • What are the limitations, and how do they constrain your claims?
  • What surprised you?
  • What would you do differently?
  • What is the contribution?

Answer the limitations question honestly. Defending a weakness that the committee can see is the fastest way to lose credibility; naming it and explaining how you accounted for it is what a defence is for.

Frequently asked questions

What is a supervisory committee?

A group of usually three faculty members, including your supervisor, who approve your proposal, read drafts and must agree the thesis is defensible. An additional external or arm’s-length examiner joins for the defence. Conflicting feedback between members is arbitrated by your supervisor.

What is a manuscript-based thesis?

A thesis composed of two or three publishable papers framed by an introduction and a synthesis chapter, permitted by many Canadian science and health programs. Confirm whether your program allows it before writing, since the structure is not interchangeable with a traditional monograph.

What happens at a Canadian thesis defence?

A presentation of roughly 15 to 20 minutes, then questioning by the external examiner and committee members over one or two rounds, then deliberation while you leave the room. The outcome is usually acceptance with minor revisions, and outright failure is rare.

Can I collect data before REB approval?

No. Under TCPS 2 no data may be collected before Research Ethics Board approval, and data gathered beforehand generally cannot be used in your thesis or published. Review takes two to eight weeks and should be treated as a blocking dependency in your timeline.
